Smith - On Monday, March 19, 1888 died Margaret A, wife of Enoch R. Smith. Her illness, pneumonia, was brief and almost without pain. Her death was quiet and beautiful even like unto the closing of a flower at the end of day. She was born Jan 19, 1825. She was the eldest born to Joshua and Martha Cromwell, of Fayette County, near Lexington, Ky. Her mother died when she was nine years of age, leaving to Margaret's youthful care three younger children, John W., Mary and Susan W. Cromwell, of Fayette County survive, also Susan W, widow of Capt. AM Sherly of Louisville, Mary, wife of George Smith died many years ago.
Until her marriage with Enoch R. Smith, she was not only keeper of her father's house but his constant counselor. Her married life, covering a period of nearly 45 years was a most happy one, blessed with the birth of 10 children; six of these and their aged father live to mourn their great loss. Her funeral services conducted by Rev. TS Guthrie of Muncie, Ind were held in the First Presbyterian Church in Crawfordsville, Ind on Thursday morning, March 22. Messrs. JW Wilson; Wm. Webster; IN Myers; JL Williams; O Stingley; JB Irons of the IOOF kindly acted as pall bearers. Her body reached Lexington Friday noon, March 23, and was quietly taken by near relatives and a few friends, Messrs. Moses Randolph; JW Stevenson; HC Funk; JB Stevenson and WL Atkins, acting as pall bearers and tenderly placed her near her lamented father, and by the side of a beloved son who died a few years ago, after many years of patient suffering, whic he had borene with resignation, but she, with angelic devotion. As a wife she was a jewel above price, aye, better than either jewels or much fine gold. As a mother she was tender, loving, full of the quickest consideration - which never failed - for all of her children and her children's children.
As a neightor she was ready in all times of sickness and sorrow, to reach out a helping hand, speak kindly words, do gentle acts of mercy attend the dying, close the eyes of the dead and comfort the living with her presence and good cheer. "The light of my life has gone out," said the husband, but he added, "only to burn more brightly on the shores of the great hereafter, where I hope to follow, guided by its glorifying rays." - kbz

Margaret a. Smith, wife of Enoch Smith and eldest daughter of the late Joshua Cromwell of Lexington, Ky died at the home place in this city at noon on Monday March 19, 1888. Mrs. Smith was born in Lexington on Jan 25, 1825; age 63 years one month 28 days. She was left an orphan without a mother in her 9th year with three younger children. Her sister, Mrs. Capt. Shirley and one brother John Cromwell are living. Her sister, Mrs. George Smith preceded her. She was her father’s housekeeper until she married on 25 May 1843 and was mother of 10 children, six of whom are living four here and two in Illinois. Four of them preceded her to the better land. She was not only a mother to her own children but a mother, loving and kind to from one to three motherless children at a time all her life, a faithful and kind companion ever keeping the Light trimmed and burning in her husband’s prosperity and adversity. Her light has gone out only to burn brighter that he may follow in the bright rays to that glorious home of the faithful Christian. The funeral will be from the 1st Presbyterian Church at 10 o’clock a.m. and in the afternoon the remains will be taken via the Monon Road to Lexington Ky for interment, being accompanied by Mr. Enoch Smith and two daughters. Her death was caused from pneumonia.
